Hi Tom,

It's been great to follow your build of the sharpening bench. Lots of great techniques being used here that will surely help anywone planning to build a sharpening bench or a workbench.

I'm looking forward for that breadboard post!

Take care,
Luis

John,

thanks for the question- the tenons on the outside of the breadboards aren't glued to allow for wood movement. the holes that the dowels are through were also elongated before assembly. one last point, the mortises for these two outside tenons are made a little longer than the tenons as well.
The breadboard technique deserves a blog of its own....I'll try to post something in the new year.
cheers!

Tom,

Quick question, why didn't you glue all the tenons that go in the bread board ends? Does this allow for controlled wood movement?

John

hey martin,
thanks for the comments-
i'm not too worried about it...this is a sharpening bench- it sure looks pretty at this stage but give it a month and it'll be just another workbench!

i did give it a few coats of oil and wax so that should protect it some. i've actually been using it everyday for the past week and so far so good.

cheers!

hey Tom

Very nice!

When I use my granite plate for flatening my water stones, I do make quite a mess on my table. Aren't you worried about slury getting into the oak pores of the top?

Martin

David, thanks for the comments...
I wasn't try to show it off, just showing the dovetails-but know that you mention it, it does look a little like a gglamour shot ! Veritas sent it to me to try out for a review I'm doing for Canadian Woodworking Magazine. I also have the Lie Nielsen low angle block and still waiting to receive the new Stanley...
I'll let you know what I think of all three.
cheers!
