Hands as hands…

“It is a tragedy of the first magnitude that millions of people have ceased to use their hands as hands.Nature has bestowed upon us this great gift which is our hands. If the craze for machinery methods continues, it is highly likely that a time will come when we shall be so incapacitated and weak that we shall begin to curse ourselves for having forgotten the use of the living machines given to us by God.”
Mahatma Gandhi

Great quote again Tom, you should put all these philosophical gems into another book, but Im sure they’ll be peppered throughout your 2nd book, so we’ll be patient and wait for that….Patience is a virtue….grasshopper.

I presume that the pic of the lovely plane is another one of your own designs, what is it a smoother?

Steve- you’re correct on all three counts.
Inspirational quotes peppered through new book? Check.
Lovely plane of my own design? Check.
Smoother? Well it’s actually a ‘high angle’ smoother but- check!
    ; )

    thanks for the comment.

    Tom,
Thank you for a great Blog – I have found so much inspiration from your work and words – really looking forward to your next book. Brilliant quote and too true. Thank you for helping to keep hand tool woodwork alive and accessible (I am gradually converting to a hand tool only shop and the benefits have been huge in so many different ways).
P.S – The plane looks great!

    Hi Tom
It’s been a while since I’ve commented on your blog. This post jumps out and grabs you! Thanks for posting. The other posts are awesome too. Off the topic I’m building a frame saw and wanted to share it with you when I’m done. I’m using hand tools to build a hand tool. Gramercy tools has a free PDF download detailing the parts.
    Peace!
    John

Thanks TJIC- the new book will have full plans for this plane as well as a half dozen other work shop tools. Of course there are another half dozen or so furniture projects as well!
Busy days ahead- my deadline is Oct. 30th so I expect the book this winter. No exact date just yet but believe me, when I know, everyone will know~; )
