5.0 out of 5 stars Great Mindset, Great Inspiration,
January 2, 2010
By Christopher Lindsay

Bridging the gap between a strictly “how-to” manual about furniture construction, and a treatise on how method influences creativity, this book brings together the art and science of woodworking in a highly enjoyable way. Tom Fidgen is a musician as well as a furniture maker — and it shows in the designs in the book. His approach reflects how you can put your own stamp on traditional forms. There are several types of joinery detailed that are both structurally creative and visually pleasing. Having just adopted one of the plans to make a different, but similar, piece of my own design I can say that the techniques are sound and transferable to your own projects.

The projects in the book are set up by a couple of chapters that discuss tools and jigs and methods for making furniture by hand. Even if you are already familiar with these techniques it makes for pleasant reading on its own — a nice space to be as you contemplate how and why you work with wood.

This is a great book!! I got this book as a Christmas present and can’t put it down. The writing just flows like Tom is speaking to me directly. The plans are beautiful drawn with photos to help accompany a hand technique. Each technique is clearly explained in both words and pictures. I’m looking forward to building the projects in the book.

Fantastic book even, if you are like me, you aren’t going to be building these pieces.

The writing, pictures, and layout make it a great book for flipping through to get ideas about what you should look for in good furniture. Tom has a great writing style that most people should enjoy.

Sorry, I can’t comment on the design specs but they look okay. And of course you could always ask Tom questions on his blog: [...]

BTW: I am lucky enough to have purchased two custom pieces from Tom.
