I just received these great shots from Tyler Lancaster who recently finished his own Cabinetmakers Toolchest in Cherry and Walnut. Tyler sent me the following letter on December 16th and judging by the photos, he followed through with his holiday project plans.
Hi Tom,
My name is Tyler Lancaster, I received your book “Made by Hand” last month for my birthday and I have had the chance to read it. I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to write it, I truly enjoyed it and have drawn great inspiration from it. I am currently enrolled in the 2nd year of the Heritage Carpentry program at Algonquin College in Perth Ontario, and have since been taught how to use, sharpen and take care of hand tools, before that I solely relied on power tools every step of the way. Since beginning the program I have found a great appreciation for using only hand tools and your book just made me want to use them even more. As soon as I write my last exam tomorrow I plan on taking a shot at building your cabinet makers tool chest design from the book over the holidays.
Thanks again,
Tyler
Well done indeed! Great job Tyler- the cherry looks great with the walnut and I love the interior till as well. I also notice you added a second bead along the tool chest lid which is something I didn’t do- it’s nice to see wood workers adding their own styles and tastes to the project.
Thanks for sharing these shots and I encourage anyone else out there who have made any of the plans from my book to send in some pics and share them here.
cheers!

Nice project Tyler! Looks like your toolchest came together with nice and tidy joinery, well done.
