It Starts with a Box.

In this course you’ll learn fundamental hand tool techniques while you design and build a custom box.

From design and construction techniques, to joinery and finishing, this class will educate and inspire you.

During the week you’ll learn how to:

  • Design your project using full scale drawings.
  • Creating an accurate cut list.
  • Learn to read and understand wood grain and what to look for when choosing materials.
  •  Working at a traditional workbench with bench hooks and shooting boards.
  • Dimensioning wood using hand saws and hand planes.
  • Cutting grooves and rabbets with special purpose hand planes.
  • Design, laying-out and executing dovetail joinery.
  • Making the box lid.
  • Finishing and Final Details


This course is at our workshop on Cape Breton Island, in Nova Scotia.

Our days begin at 9am and run to 5pm with a lunch break around mid-day.

Cape Breton Island has much to offer. Scenic beaches, whale tours, hiking, fine dining, and world renown golf. Of course we’re also on the doorstep of the Cabot Trail with all of the natural beauty it offers.
