Cape Breton Classes
Joinery Bootcamp

During this full day class you’ll learn the basics of mortise and tenon joinery as you build a stand that can be used in the workshop or as a quilt rack or towel stand.

You’ll see how the joinery and basic design of this project can be easily adapted into other furniture designs and construction methods.

Starting at the bottom, this project features hidden mortise and tenon joinery for the legs, through mortise and tenon joinery for the middle cross stretcher, and a lap joint at the top.

These three variations of the mortise and tenon joint can be used throughout many of your woodworking projects and this is a great place to get started and practice this traditional form of joinery.

In this class you will learn:

  • What to look for when choosing materials.
  • How to layout and label your project parts.
  • How to use builders triangles to reference your pieces and how to hold your work using a proper workbench.
  • You’ll learn how to use a combination square, marking gauge and marking knife as you carefully layout your joinery.
  • You’ll learn how to use both rip and crosscut backsaws; both are critical tools used in hand tool woodworking.
  • You’ll learn safe chisel techniques as you fit your joinery together.
  • You’ll learn about using wooden pegs to secure joinery as well as the basics of draw-boring your joinery.
  • You’ll learn how to glue the project and the finishing options that are available.

This is a great day long class to get you started with hand tools and furniture making.
