Wow, Friday already?
I almost missed it!
Just like that, the busiest week of the season is behind us. Here’s the latest ‘definitely not furniture‘ update.
Simple gifts for the giving season.
Family and friends.
The utility and simplicity, hand shaping an off-cut can be the most rewarding projects when the heart is guiding the hand.
Happy holidays again!
Spoons ,,,one of the best items i have always enjoyed making ,,, then just give them away,is the best part,,, I didn’t always give them away, i sold them at a local market where i made them on a shaving horse ( quick and easy and different), from local green hardwoods,,, the process almost always sold a spoon or dozen,,,I enjoy making them even now and the pleasure is recipicated when i meet people who tell me they still have the spoon they watched me make for them and still love it, many years after,,,Making them infrount of people was a great way to open the whole idea of hand crafting and sure started some great friendships and didn’t hurt sales at all,,,didn’t pay the rent but kept me alive to do other woodwork to pay the rent,,,Cheers
Hey Tom,
The spoon and knife look great. I just got into spoon carving over the past year, I’ve carved forty or so and plan to set up a booth at a local arts market this spring/summer and sell some. It is very rewarding hand tool work and simple tools (hatchet, knife, hook knife) though recently i’ve started some more refined designs with a spoke shave and drawknife….anyway keep up the good work….love the dnf series.
Thanks Pat-
you’re right, a pocket of tools and a stick of wood, what could be better!
Cheers.

‘black oak burl’-
even the name sounds nasty!
Maybe a new rum drink or the title of a Strathspey?
Cheers!
Black Oak Burl, is not friendly…
Thanks Rick- ; )
best advice I can give- start with a ‘friendly’ piece of hardwood!
Happy new year.
Tom
I gave hand made gifts this year and people were blown away – I was surprised. Now about your spoon – I have not been able to get the sides steep and thin like yours. Mine look very clunky; yours look, well, professional and very high grade professional at that. I’ll try harder and practice this year on the bowl.
Happy new year,
Rick
You did a great job on these Tom,
I’ve made spoons in the past, but can never seem to get the bowl of the spoon as steep or as deep as I really wanted.
This year, and this is the 5th year I’ve given hand made gifts, was carved santa ornaments, and a step stool that my son and I made together.
Happy New Year!
and the most apropos…
Cheers! :P
Sam
Thanks Sam-
hand made gifts are always the way to go!
all the best in 2013.
