Sawyer’s bench in walnut

I received a letter from John in Toronto this week and wanted to share it with you. John recently made himself a Sawyer’s bench, following plans from my book, The Unplugged Woodshop.

He used walnut throughout and did an excellent job. Thanks again for sharing these with us John, and all the best in your woodworking journey!

Removable fence

Hi Tom

I finally carved out some time to building the sawyer bench last month. It was much-needed workshop appliance, as breaking down large pieces at my bench was getting awkward. I built it out of walnut and applied the design alteration you suggested, of extending the fence to the end of the bench. The joinery was straight forward and your commentary introduced techniques and instilled good habits that will be used on future projects.
Your bench is a solid design and I feel it will help me improve my sawing skill; as I dive into the world of unplugged woodworking.
Regards
John Payne

With saw.
