READERS PROJECT

Box detail

I received a letter from Danny in New Zealand this week and thought I’d share it with you. Danny is a member of our online community, An Unplugged Life, and recently completed this nice little box project.

Thanks again Danny-

great job on the box!

Dear Tom,
I hope this email finds you well and you can see the photos ok. Apart from a chainsaw mill and a big bandsaw used to rip the 50mm thick boards in half the box was made and done by hand. The joints are mitred dovetails for strength and the dadoes for the lid and base cut with a 1/4” dado plane from Terry Gordon. The timber is (we are almost certain) Pigeonberry Ash (Elaeocarpus spp.) native to Eastern Australia. The box and tools are now hopefully in one piece as they should have arrived in the UK via New Zealand by now with my Dad. I made the box for his 70th birthday a little late but I think he was happy.
The squares are works of art. The mitre square is the 2” in solid brass and the square is a 10” with Rose She oak inlay.
Thanks for answering all my questions on your website
All the best
Danny Bridge
